An Evocative Portrait of Athens Via Time and Household

ATHENS — Eirini Vourloumis’s present Within the Identical House — a transferring dialogue along with her grandfather, painter Andreas Vourloumis, and a flickering portrait of the Greek capital — is put in in a light-filled nook of the Nationwide Museum of Modern Artwork that appears out onto Athens. Via the home windows, leaves flash like shoals of fish within the late summer season breeze; inside, amid the gallery’s clear, white partitions and wood show boards, Eirini’s mobile phone images and Andreas’s work and sketches current the sunshine, shade, texture, and movement of Athenian every day life.

These twinned our bodies of labor — one from the twentieth century, the opposite present — convey directly transience and continuity. The crystalline Athenian mild is a continuing, whilst it’s segmented by the city geometry of streets, doorways, home windows, awnings. Each artists have a approach with shade: the honey of Athens’s bush-hammered concrete; the dusty mauve of its sunsets. Andreas’s “Canary” (all the artist’s works are undated), perched within the chartreuse glow of a summer season afternoon, enhances Eirini’s completely coiffed matron, veiled by a golden sheaf of scorched fig leaves.

Extra refined, winking connections floor as effectively. Andreas’s “Research on how the attention sees: Eyes closed” seems like nothing a lot as two lilac eggs tucked into mossy nests. Eirini’s accompaniment is a canted-angle picture of tarmac strewn with the shadows of branches. It’s {a photograph} that reads like a contemporary mistake — a picture captured unconsciously, mid-stride. Andreas’s work is marked by the affect of Impressionism, and Eirini’s images at instances echo that fashion, as fog or rain smears her topics into painterly abstractions. As Andreas scrawled in a poem displayed among the many photographs, “The inside [is] sure to the outer / We develop into one, the world and its beholder.”

The portrait of Athens that emerges right here is evocative, intimate, actual in its native element. However the exhibition’s actual cost comes from its intergenerational alternate, each a dialog and a tribute. In Andreas’s “Examine, self portrait,” the painter’s bespectacled face emerges from a shaded pocket, his mouth partly open, as if talking; in Eirini’s work, she seems solely as a shadow, her tangled curls set in opposition to a sq. of sensible white mild. The photographs dance collectively throughout time.
